In April 2013, Taylor, Emily, and I (Molly) went to Conner Prairie to go through their Follow the North Star (FNS) program. In this program, guests are slaves on the Underground Railroad for 90 minutes. Conner Prairie ties everything together at the end, explaining how slavery is still going on today. Modern-day Slavery is very real, and it is right in our backyards (sometimes literally).
At "The Sale" at Follow the North Star, where you are sold to your new owners, you are asked questions like "What can you do?" "How many children have you had?" "What kind of work are you good for?" etc. I was asked how many children I had had, and I said none.
"None? How old are you, breeder?" they said.
"Fifteen."
"Fifteen! What's wrong with you? Can't you have children? Is there something wrong with you?" they yelled. I have been through the program several times, but this time I was really targeted for 'not having dropped any darkies'. That was all I was good for ~ If I didn't breed well, I wasn't worth any more than a cow that couldn't breed.
I knew it was only "pretend"~ but what if that is what you had been told your entire life? You were only good for what your "masters" got out of you? You are no better than a horse or mule.
That is what so many of these children have been told, and treated as. Things. To be used, and abused. One thing I don't want to forget in this fight for freedom is this: they are in physical bondage, but they are also in spiritual bondage. We need to pray for their rescue, but also for their salvation. They must realized how truly valuable they are to Christ, and what He did for them! They are not "things" ~ they are eternal souls, created by God the Father!
